On the night of June 27th, Lionel Messi scored for the seventh straight World Cup game. He also broke the all-time men’s World Cup scoring record with his 19th goal. Argentina beat Jordan 3-1 in their final group stage match.
 Messi scored from a free kick in the 80th minute. A foul just outside the penalty area gave him the chance. He kicked the ball low, just above the grass. The shot flew between two Jordan defenders into the left corner of the net.
 Messi now has 123 international goals in 202 games. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has more, with 145 goals.
 Before this, only two other players had scored in six consecutive World Cup games — Just Fontaine from France and Jairzinho from Brazil.
 Even though Messi has won the Ballon d’Or eight times as the best player in Europe, Messi has never won the Golden Boot. This award goes to the top scorer in each World Cup. This tournament is his sixth chance to win it.
