On May 26th, the United Kingdom broke a temperature record that had lasted about a century for the second time in 24 hours as a spring heat wave spread across parts of Western Europe.
A temperature of 35.1℃ was recorded at London’s Kew Gardens, breaking the 34.8℃ record set a day earlier at Kew. It also beat the older record of 32.8℃ set in 1922 and matched in 1944.
On May 25th, France also broke temperature records. Temperatures reached 36℃ in the southwest and remained above 20℃ at night in many places. The national weather service in France said a “heat dome” was trapping hot air because of a high-pressure weather front. This was producing temperatures more than 10℃ above what is usual for this time of year. Several people drowned in Britain and France while trying to cool down. Large parts of the Iberian Peninsula had temperatures 5℃ to 10℃ higher than normal.
Unpredictable and extreme weather is becoming more frequent as Earth gets warmer.
