The packaging on some snacks in Japan is turning black and white because the war in Iran is stopping the supply of an ingredient needed for colored ink.
Calbee Inc., a company in Tokyo that makes potato chips and cereal, said that 14 of its products will start using only black and white ink on May 25th. This change helps them be more flexible with changing geopolitical conditions. The snacks inside the bags are exactly the same. It’s still unclear how long the change might last.
Japan relies almost entirely on oil imports. A product made from oil called naphtha is used to make ink. The government has worked to calm fears by pointing out that the nation has oil reserves.
Calbee was founded in 1949 and has more than 5,000 group workers. They sell snacks in Japan’s convenience stores and ship them to the U.S., China and Australia.
“Calbee remains committed to maintaining a stable supply of safe, high quality products,” the company said. “We ask for your understanding.”
