A French teen is being charged with mischief and public nuisance in Singapore. This came after he posted a video on social media of himself licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine and then putting it back.
According to The Straits Times, Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 18, was charged on April 24th and hasn’t entered a plea. He allegedly committed the offense at a shopping mall on March 12th, and his video spread rapidly, the report said. In Singapore, a mischief charge can lead to up to two years in prison, a fine, or both. A public nuisance charge is less serious and can bring up to three months in prison, a fine, or both.
The company that operates the juice vending machine is called IJooz. It filed a police report. It also sanitized the dispenser while replacing 500 straws in the machine. Singapore has strict rules about public behavior and cleanliness. For example, there are limits on chewing gum and strong penalties for littering and vandalism.
