On April 14th, Spain’s government finished approving a plan it had announced earlier this year for migrant amnesty. The plan will allow hundreds of thousands of immigrants living and working in Spain without authorization to apply for legal status.
The idea is very different from how many other European countries are handling immigration. It also contrasts with the strict immigration policies used by the Trump administration in the United States.
Spain’s Migration Minister, Elma Saiz, said migrants could start applying on April 16th. The deadline to apply is June 30th. To qualify, applicants must have arrived in Spain before January 1st and prove that they have been living in the country for at least five months. They must also show that they have no criminal record. Those who meet the requirements can apply for a one-year residency and work permit.
Saiz said the plan is a way that Spain can continue to grow. Spain has been one of the fastest-growing economies in the European Union for two years.
