On April 8th, Iran, the United States and Israel agreed to a temporary, two-week ceasefire in the war that has disrupted the global energy market. U.S. President Donald Trump previously threatened to destroy Iranian “civilization,” but backed off those threats.
However, the U.S. and Iran each had their own competing peace plans, and they disagreed on key issues. The U.S. demanded that Iran give up its nuclear program entirely, while Iran insisted on its right to continue developing nuclear material, wanted all U.S. forces withdrawn from the region, and said it would charge ships fees to pass through an important waterway called the Strait of Hormuz.
Israel agreed to the U.S. ceasefire with Iran, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on April 8th it doesn’t include the fighting against Hezbollah, a militant group in Lebanon.
Pakistan, who helped negotiate the deal, said the ceasefire began immediately on April 8th. But Iran attacked Gulf Arab states and Israel soon after. Peace talks began on April 10th in Islamabad, Pakistan.
