On December 20th, a German engineer who uses a wheelchair flew to space with five other passengers. She left her wheelchair behind and floated in space while looking down at Earth.
Seven years ago, Michaela Benthaus was severely injured in a mountain bike accident and became paralyzed from the waist down. She became the first wheelchair user to travel in space when she launched from West Texas with Jeff Bezos’ company Blue Origin.
The capsule reached more than 105 kilometers above Earth. Benthaus said she laughed all the way up and tried to turn upside down in space.
The 10-minute flight required only minor changes to accommodate Benthaus. Blue Origin added a patient transfer board so she could move between the capsule’s hatch and her seat. After landing, the company placed a carpet on the desert floor. This gave her immediate access to her wheelchair.
