On December 5th, German lawmakers approved the government’s plan to attract more military recruits. The country wants to grow its armed forces because of concerns about Russia. In recent years, the number of military personnel has stayed around 180,000. The government wants to raise the figure to 260,000 over the next decade. Students protested against this government plan.
Starting next year, questionnaires will be sent to young men and women who turn 18. The questionnaires ask about their willingness and ability to serve. Men must answer these questions. Later, young men will need to take medical examinations.
Germany stopped conscription for men in 2011. Since then, it has struggled to attract large numbers of short-term volunteers. The new plan does not bring back conscription. However, it allows the possibility of required service for at least a limited number of people if needed.
