非洲培育超級豆 饑荒有解

 As hunger and climate threaten parts of Africa, the so-called "super bean" is being promoted by farmers and experts. The high-yield beans are made from normal genetic selection, not the kind of genetic modification technologies that many disagree over. In Uganda, a farmer is amazed at the dramatic changes the pinkish beans have made for his family. They used to harvest two sacks of normal beans; now they take in six.
 The alert status of the volcano has been upgraded from level three to level four (the highest possible level). Local authorities ordered the evacuation of almost 100,000 people within the 10-kilometer area around it. It's unclear how bad the current eruption might get or how long it could last.
 The group operates one of just two bean "gene banks" in Africa. One "gene bank" is on the outskirts of Uganda's capital, Kampala. The other is in Malawi in southern Africa. Beans from the two banks are sent to 30 countries across the continent to be developed further so they can cope with local conditions.
 Researchers are looking for ways to develop even better super beans with traits like early maturation, drought- and pesttolerance as well as high micronutrient content.

 當水源不足時,乾旱會使農地枯竭, 進而釀成饑荒。國際熱帶農業中心表示 ,這些以常規方式培育的豆子可抗旱。
 非洲只有兩家豆子「基因銀行」,一 家位於烏干達首都坎帕拉的市郊,另一 家在非洲南部的馬拉威,國際熱帶農業 中心經營其中一家。基因銀行保存的豆 子會分送到非洲30 個國家進一步培育 ,以適應當地的環境與條件。
 研究員努力找出方法,希望培育出更 好的超級豆子,具備早熟、抗旱、抗蟲 ,以及富含高微量營養素等特質。
