On October 1, a gunman perched
on the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas
hotel-casino and opened fire on a
crowd at a country music festival
below, killing at least 59 and
wounding 527. It was the deadliest
mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
Authorities said gunman Stephen Craig Paddock killed himself in the hotel before police arrived. He had as many as 10 guns with him, including rifles. His motive for the attack is unknown. But a law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was no immediate evidence it was connected to international terrorism.
In the Middle East, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack and said the gunman was "a soldier" who had converted to Islam months ago. But it gave no evidence. The US police said Paddock, a 64-year-old white man, was retired with no criminal record in the Nevada county where he lived.
