North Korea fired an intermediaterange
ballistic missile again on August
29, the 13th launch this year. The
missile was fired from the country's
capital, Pyongyang, and flew over
Japan before dropping into the
northern Pacific Ocean. The launch is
seen as a clear challenge because the
US and South Korea are conducting
war games nearby.
Some analysts believe the North could have working long-range nuclear missiles before the end of President Donald Trump's first term in early 2021.
In a rare move, South Korea's military released footage of its own missile tests. The videos showed two types of new missiles with ranges of 800 kilometers and 500 kilometers. Its air force carried out a live-fire drill in response to the North's latest test-flight.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the North's move a new and unique threat. He said that an emergency meeting was needed at the U.N. Security Council. He also said, "President Trump expressed his strong commitment to defending Japan, saying he was 100 percent with Japan as an ally."
