On June 12, tens of thousands of people came together across Russia to protest corruption. They demanded President Putin resign. Police arrested opposition leader Alexei Navalny outside his home in Moscow before demonstrators took to the streets. Navalny has announced his intention to run for president next year against Putin. More than a thousand of his supporters were arrested as well.
Although it was not clear if the widespread protests were larger than those in March, this shows people are very unhappy with the government. Putin is expected to run for another term in 2018, but protesters questioned his legitimacy, chanting "Down with the czar."
It looked like the demonstrators were mostly younger — those who were born or grew up during Putin's 17 years in power. Similar crowds turned out on March 26, confusing officials who had thought the younger generation didn't care about politics.
In Washington, the US strongly condemned the arrests of peaceful protesters and called on the Russian authorities to immediately release all of them.
