On May 27, AlphaGo won its third and final game against Ke Jie, China's top Go player. AlphaGo is a Google artificial intelligence (AI) system.
The 3-0 victory means AlphaGo is better than any human player alive today. The AI program developed by DeepMind rose to the top just a little over a year ago when it unexpectedly defeated South Korean Go champion Lee Se-dol.
In the second match, Ke's first 50 moves were "played perfectly", said Demis Hassabis, chief executive of DeepMind. "For the first 100 moves, it was the closest we've ever seen anyone play against the Master version of AlphaGo."
"I also thought that I was very close to winning the match in the middle," 19-year-old Ke said. "I could feel my heart thumping. But maybe because I was too excited, I did some wrong or stupid moves. I guess that's the biggest weak point of human beings."
Since mankind is not a challenge, AlphaGo will retire from Go games and move on to projects like "finding new cures for diseases, dramatically reducing energy consumption, or inventing revolutionary new materials."
