Carrie Lam, Beijing's preferred candidate was
chosen as Hong Kong's new chief executive on
March 26. In the race, she won 777 out of 1194
votes cast. With strong support from China's
communist leadership, 59-year-old Lam's victory
was hardly a surprise, though she was far less
popular than her main rival.
In August of 2014, Lam, the former chief secretary or No. 2 official, helped unveil an electoral reform proposal known as "831 framework" that promised voting rights for all city residents, but only after Beijing selected its own candidates.
Lam has vowed to heal the divide in Hong Kong society. After more than two years of protests over the city's political future, this seemed to be what her city needed to hear. But pro-democracy supporters see her as the proxy of the Beijing and out of the touch with the common people. Following her victory, some activists yelled slogans and held up yellow umbrellas, the symbol of the 2014 "umbrella movement." They demanded a direct choice by Hong Kong's 3.8 million voters.
