The historic, unanimous ruling by the 8-member panel makes her South Korea's first democratically elected leader to be removed from office. She now loses her presidential immunity and could face criminal charges. Her acts "seriously impaired the rule of law and betrayed the public trust," said the acting Chief Justice Lee Jung-mi.
Her successor must be chosen within 60 days. Opposition leader Moon Jae-in currently enjoys a comfortable lead in opinion surveys. Whoever becomes the next leader will take over a country facing a hostile North Korea, a stagnant economy and deep social and political divides.
